Bardia National Park

Bardia National Park

Nepal Tour

Overview

Bardia National Park, established in 1988, is Nepal’s largest and most undisturbed national park, covering about 968 square kilometers in the far-west Terai region along the eastern bank of the Karnali River. It extends from the Churia hills southward to the Bhabhar slopes, featuring diverse ecosystems including sal forests, grasslands, and riverine habitats. This vast wilderness is vital for wildlife conservation and ecological balance.

Home to over 839 plant species and 642 animal species, Bardia National Park supports 53 mammals and 407 birds. It boasts unique wildlife such as Bengal tigers, greater one-horned rhinoceros, black buck, swamp deer, wild boar, and the rare Gangetic dolphin. The park’s rivers attract water birds like herons and kingfishers, making it a rich sanctuary for endangered species and a natural paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

Originally a royal hunting reserve, Bardia was declared a national park to protect its critical ecosystems and endangered species habitats. The park is a prime location for jungle safaris, boat rides on the Karnali River, and nature walks. It also plays a significant role in community conservation efforts, contributing both to biodiversity preservation and sustainable ecotourism in Nepal’s Terai region.

Itinerary

Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then take a 2-3 hour drive to Bardia National Park. After checking into your lodge, relax and unwind. Depending on timing, you can visit a nearby Tharu village, the Elephant Breeding Center, or go bird watching to start connecting with the park’s natural environment.

Spend the day on an immersive jungle walk with a packed lunch, focusing on tiger tracking, bird watching, and spotting other wildlife like deer and wild boar. Visit the Crocodile Breeding Center to learn about conservation efforts. In the evening, experience Tharu culture through a museum visit or attending a cultural performance.

Embark on a full-day jeep safari with packed lunch inside the park to explore deeper wildlife habitats including Bengal tiger zones. Continue with bird watching and tiger tracking opportunities. In the evening, enjoy a cultural dance performed by local Tharu people at the resort, enhancing your cultural connection.

After breakfast, relax with optional activities like bird watching or a short nature walk near the lodge. Then check out and drive back to Nepalgunj airport for your flight back to Kathmandu or onward destination.

If staying an extra day, you can enjoy additional jungle walks, boat safaris on the Karnali or Babai rivers, and visits to local wildlife or conservation centers. This extra day increases chances of spotting rare species and deepens your appreciation of the park’s biodiversity.
