Dolpa Region

Jumla Upper Dolpo is one of Nepal’s most remote and restricted regions, famously featured in Eric Valli’s Oscar-nominated film Caravan (Himalaya). With only a limited number of annual permits issued, the area remains untouched by modern urbanization. Its isolation preserves stunning landscapes, traditional villages, and a rare glimpse into authentic Himalayan life.
This culturally rich Tibetan region lies in the upper Dolpa District and partially within Shey Phoksundo National Park. Locals follow the ancient Bon religion, and visitors can explore centuries-old monasteries, historic artifacts, and traditional architecture. Jumla Upper Dolpo offers a unique blend of spirituality, culture, and breathtaking high-altitude scenery for adventurous travelers.
Nature thrives here with diverse wildlife including snow leopards, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, and blue sheep, alongside six species of reptiles and 29 types of butterflies. The region is dotted with rhododendron forests, juniper, and Himalayan birch. Highlights include the serene Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest lake, and Shey Gompa, both must-visit spots for trekkers and nature lovers alike.
