Langtang-Gosaikunda Trek

Langtang-Gosaikunda Trek

Langtang Region

Overview

The Langtang-Gosainkunda Trek offers adventurers a journey through the stunning Langtang region, located between Kathmandu and the Tibetan border. Established as Langtang National Park in 1976, it was Nepal’s first Himalayan national park. According to legend, a lama discovered the valley while following a runaway yak, giving the area its name—“Lang” meaning yak and “Tang” meaning to follow. This trek introduces travelers to a landscape rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The Langtang-Gosainkunda Trek takes trekkers through diverse climatic zones, from subtropical forests to alpine regions. The valley is home to oak, fir, pine, spruce, and maple forests, sheltering wildlife such as red pandas, Himalayan black bears, and ghorals. Travelers can experience the traditional lifestyle of the Tamang people, renowned for farming, cattle breeding, and weaving. The trek offers breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung and surrounding Himalayan peaks, making it an unforgettable adventure.

Gosainkunda Lake, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, is a highlight of the Langtang-Gosainkunda Trek. Pilgrims visit during the festival of Janai Purnima to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Gauri, believing the lake’s water to be holy. Accessible from Dhunche in Langtang or Sundarijal near Kathmandu, the trek allows visitors to explore rhododendron forests, glaciers, and stunning mountain vistas while experiencing a unique spiritual and cultural journey through Nepal’s pristine highlands.
